Welcome to Fourth Grade!

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

My name is Tasha Valentyn and as you know I am your child’s fourth grade teacher. I am so excited for another great year!! I know that many of you have questions regarding the upcoming year so I want to take a minute of your time to go over a few things about the year.

 Contact Information

I feel communication is essential for a successful year, and there are many ways to reach me!

You can send a note!  All notes can be written in or attached to your child’s agenda, which will come to and from school each day.  I will check agendas every morning.  Please also checkt here for any notes from me!

Email is a great way to communicate and one which I use most often. My email address is tvalentyn@kimberly.k12.wi.us.

If you would like to call, the number at Woodland is 920-730-0924 ext. 7119.

Snack/Treats

All students may bring a nutritious snack to school.  Please bring an individual snack as we do not have room to store boxes of snack. Some great ideas are fruit, veggies, whole wheat crackers, cheerios, granola/fruit bars, etc.

Also, just let me know if your child is planning to bring in a treat for his or her birthday.  We can celebrate summer birthdays on the half-birthday anniversary or whenever your child prefers.

Your child is also more than welcome to have a water bottle in our classroom.  I only ask that water bottles do not have twist-caps, so there can be fewer spills!

Homework

Your child will be responsible for writing down any homework or assignments each day in his or her agenda. Please look at the agenda every night to see what homework your child is responsible for. It is my hope your child will become independently responsible for checking his or her agenda and then completing his or her homework accordingly. It is also your child’s responsibility to share the information in their agenda and ask you to sign it every night.

In fourth grade your child will have Study Links (similar to Home Links in third grade) that go along with our daily math lessons. These are to be completed at home but if your child has questions or is unsure of something please just jot a note in his or her agenda and I will go over it at school the next day. Study Links should be a review, not a struggle, so if your child is unsure please have him or her ask for help at school.

If your child does not have his or her homework completed and does not have a note he or she will need to stay in for recess to complete it.

As far as literacy homework we ask that your child choose to read or write (or a combination of both) every night at home. There are lots of ideas of things your child can read or write but here are just a few: brochures, magazines, menus, lists, letters, how-to, poetry, etc.

Behavior Plan

Our classroom rules directly correlate with the four Community Values (Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Kindness) as well as “Body Basics” rules to keep us safe. If a rule is broken it will be dealt with on an individual basis.

Book Orders

I will send home book orders every month for you to look at and order from.  Please feel free to take advantage of the opportunity to inexpensively build your at-home library. You can order either online or by sending in the paper order form. This is, of course, completely optional and is a decision that is up to you.

Take Home Folder and Agenda

Your child will bring home both a take home folder and his or her agenda every night. Please check both of these with your child and send them back daily. Please use the agenda as a communication tool and sign it daily.

Science and Social Studies

Fourth grade is very exciting for many reasons! One of them is that your child will get a chance to learn from all five teachers as Mrs. Nofzinger, Mrs. Pratt, Mrs. Erdmann, Mrs. Vander Loop and I will be sharing the teaching for science and social studies. There may be science or social studies homework that comes home periodically that is designated by the particular teacher. Look for that information in your child’s agenda.

Volunteers

We are so grateful for all of our great volunteers! If you are interested in helping out in our classroom, please jot me a note in your child’s agenda or send me an email. There are many things to help out with so just let me know what you prefer: reading with students, math flashcards, editing or typing stories, photocopying, etc. Any time you can give is greatly appreciated!

In order to volunteer at school or chaperone a field trip you must fill out a Background Check form. If you have filled one out in the past then you are good to go. If you have not, please fill out a form and return it to school at least 3 weeks before the field trip or volunteer date. Thank you for your cooperation to keep our kids safe.

Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and for your support as we look forward to a successful year!! Please feel free to contact me about any questions or concerns you may have throughout the year.

It’s going to be a great year!!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Tasha Valentyn
